Copper dot inlay can be used for portraits or simple landscapes, the optimum size is 250x330 mm, but smaller and bigger sizes can also be made. There is a compromise between the size of the artwork, the diameter of the copper wire that is used and the number of dots in the artwork.

In order to get a rough idea of what your favourite picture might look in a copper dot inlay artwork, please email it through the contact page. A 640x480 pixel tif or jpg format will be fine. it will be processed and you will receive a picture of the approximate artwork that you will get.

Due to the nature of the work which is comparable to a low resolution picture, not all pictures could be used for copper dot inlays and not all details could be reflected in the finished work. As a simple guideline for choosing a picture, please avoid:

Total background area of white or lighter than the main subject colours. The best background is black.

Copper wire inlay:

The grooves are produced either by scribing and hand carving or by CNC machining. CNC machining provides the ability to make artworks from pictures, after several procedures to convert the picture to vector and subsequently to g-code.

0.5, 0.6 or 0.8 mm thick by 1.2 or 1.6 mm width copper or brass strips are used. The size of the strip is determined by the size and complexity of the image.

Copper dot inlay:

Pictures undergo several stages in order to produce a workable template for copper dot inlay. A picture could take well over 50 hours to be workable.

The template will be laid on the wood surface to carefully drill the dots. 0.5 or 0.6 mm copper or brass wires are used. The size of the wire is determined by the size and complexity (total number of dots) of the image.

Planting the wire is done totally by hand. A 250x330 mm template could well have as many as 4000 to 12000 dots.

Finishing:

After sanding and polishing, the artworks will be stained and varnished. Water based stains are used since they are much more resistant to fading and discoloration than spirit base or oil base stains. To keep the traditional look, spirit base shellac or boiled linseed oil varnish are applied. Weathering protection is done by boiled linseed oil.

Frames:

Are a combination of CNC engraving and manual inlaying.

Taarkashi (i.e. wire inlaying) is the technique of inlaying fine brass or copper wire into carefully chiseled grooves in a wooden surface. It is an ancient Persian art. Mogul emperors valued inlay works in wood and encouraged Persian craftsmen to migrate to India, where the variety and quality of exotic woods were vast.

The motifs and patterns were originally geometric shapes, floral and leaves and likewise which were intended to decorate palaces and temples.

تاركشی هنری باستانی است كه در دوران تيموريان از ايران منشاء گرفته است. پادشاهان مغول به معرق كاری علاقه زيادی داشته و مشوق اين هنر نزد ايرانيان بودند. هنرمندان ايرانی اين رشته به دليل تنوع نقش و استحكام چوب های هندوستان به آن ديار مهاجرت كرده وآثار بديعی به وجود آورده اند.

تاركشی يكی از هنر های مشتق از معرق ميباشد. در تاركشی سيم های نازكی از مس يا برنج در شكافهای بسيار ظريفی كه در سطوح چوبي ايجاد ميگرديد قرار داده ميشدند. نقوش اكثرا برگرفته از سبك هاي مغول و هندی بود و عموما شامل نقش های هندسی، گل نقش های تزئينی، نقش برگ چنار، انگور و ساير ميگرديد. اين هنر برای نقش آفرينی بر روی در های معابد كاربرد داشت ليكن در قرون 18 و 19 ميلادی به اغلب مصنوعات تزئينی منازل گسترش يافت.
